SACRAMENTO PHILHARMONIC & OPERA PRESENTS OPERA FINALE, RIGOLETTO

PDF Download

SACRAMENTO, CALIF.  The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera brings a dramatic, masterfully imagined opera to the Sacramento Community Center Theater with Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto on Saturday, April 13, 2019. The semi-staged production will feature the orchestra at the heart of the action juxtaposed by a uniquely designed set and nationally recognized artists in full costume. The opera acts as the 2018-2019 Classics Series finale, bringing to a close the SP&O’s most impactful season yet.

“Opera is at home in Sacramento and we couldn’t be more proud of that. After the success of Tosca last year it was clear that the artistic quality and emotion of this year’s opera had to resonate even more,” said Executive Director Alice Sauro.

Verdi’s tragic masterpiece of passion and retribution revolves around a lecherous duke who lives to take his pleasure and his twisted court jester named Rigoletto who lives to take his revenge. The opera’s original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to a curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter the Duke has seduced with Rigoletto’s encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda falls in love with the Duke and sacrifices her life to save him from the assassin hired by her father.

Grammy award-winning conductor Michael Christie makes his debut on Sacramento’s operatic stage to take patrons on the treacherous journey of love and betrayal. He is joined by a star-studded cast featuring lauded artists from around the nation including: rich-voiced baritone Joshua Jeremiah, colorful tenor Rafael Mouras, powerful soprano Monica Dewey, and more. The production is led by award-winning stage director Michael Mori who is known for working in both urban site-specific settings as well as conventional opera houses.

“We’re doing something different here. With a semi-staged opera, an incredible amount of energy goes into the musical details, and bringing them to sparkling life requires an excellent cast. That’s what makes this a truly unique presentation. It’s a new way to experience opera and we look forward to sharing this together,” said Sauro.

A limited number of tickets are still available at SacPhilOpera.org.

SACRAMENTO PHILHARMONIC & OPERA ANNOUNCES 2019-2020 SEASON

“All of Sacramento Becomes the Stage” During Year-long Community Center Theater Renovation

PDF Download

SACRAMENTO, CALIF.   For the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera’s 2019-2020 season, all of Sacramento will become the Orchestra’s stage.  With the Orchestra’s home, the Sacramento Community Center Theater beginning a year-long renovation, the seven concert series will feature symphonic and operatic programs in three magnificent venues: Memorial Auditorium, Fremont Presbyterian Church, and Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.  The Orchestra will return to the renovated Community Center Theater in Fall of 2020.

“We took a tour of the city in search of venues that would beautifully illustrate the interplay of music and Sacramento culture. The venues we selected will showcase music programmed specifically to the acoustic of each,” said Executive Director Alice Sauro. “Of course as our concerts have been serving so many community members, it was important to us to find spaces where we could accommodate everybody, so for the first time there will be some programs with two nights of concerts.”

SP&O’s fifth season will open on Saturday, October 19, 2019 with Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” in the historic Memorial Auditorium—the same location where Sacramento’s first orchestra appeared.  The season opener will feature returning conductor Andrew Grams and violin prodigy William Hagen, who made his professional debut at age 9. Another homage to Sacramento, the concert begins with Wagner’s March from Tannhauser, which inaugurated Memorial in 1927.

Also performing in Memorial Auditorium are Christopher Rountree making his SP&O debut, and Christoph Campestrini, returning to curate another exciting opera production. Rountree will lead the orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s rousing “1812 Overture” and the newly premiered commission by living Grammy-nominated composer Zhou Tian, celebrating a Sacramento milestone: the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad.

Operas have consistently been the SP&O’s sensational season closers, and the 19-20 season will be no different. “To have the opportunity to produce an opera in this Memorial Auditorium excites the imagination. We’re taking our time to get all of the elements in place to assure success, but we can say we’re thrilled for conductor Christoph Campestrini to make his return to Sacramento for this production,” said Sauro. The opera will be announced in Fall 2019.

Fremont Presbyterian Church, with its grand and powerful pipe organ, will thunder in Saint-Saens’ roaring “Organ Symphony,” led by Robert Moody, Music Director of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra — plus symphonies of Beethoven and Mozart.   “In our venue search, we were thrilled by the sound that emerged from the pipe organ and through every corner of the stained glass filled church.  It became apparent that it was imperative to highlight the instrument, so this unique three-part concert will begin with a recital by sensational organist, James Jones,” said Sauro.  The church will also see the return of Grammy award winner Michael Christie conducting the popular Opera Favorites program.

One of Sacramento’s downtown jewels, Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament will cradle Faure’s tender Requiem, and intimate works of Vaughn-Williams and Tallis in a way that transports patrons out of the hustle and bustle of the city into the Renaissance.

“It’s a transformative space that allows for fluid acoustics which brilliantly sets the stage for Maestro Douglas Boyd and the orchestra to perform ‘Music of the Spirit’, ” added Sauro.

The Thanksgiving weekend tradition continues with a special holiday season kick-off concert conducted by Sean O’Laughlin. He and the orchestra are joined by Marcus Scott, the current lead singer of famed Oakland funk and soul band, Tower of Power. His spirited energy will put a new spin on the classic holiday concert.

Pricing remains patron-centric and has not increased for the 19-20 Season. Subscription packages start at $156. Subscription information for renewing subscribers has just been released.  Patrons seeking to become subscribers are encouraged to order now to guarantee the best seating.  Single tickets may be purchased in late August, following Subscriber Courtesy Week when subscribers will be able to purchase additional single tickets in advance of public release. Subscriptions may be purchased by calling our box office at 916-476-5975 or by visiting SacPhilOpera.org.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE FOR FIRST ALL-AMERICAN PROGRAM, RHAPSODY IN BLUE
PDF Download

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera is excited to announce their first ever All-American orchestral program featuring an artist-in-residence: contemporary composer, Loren Loiacono! The week leading up to the highly-anticipated presentation of Rhapsody in Blue on February 23, 2019 includes topical performance and engagement events throughout the Sacramento districts, focused on exploring the tradition and trajectory of orchestral music made in America. Featured speakers and performers include Ms. Loiacono, Maestro David Alan Miller, soloist Kevin Cole and members of the SP&O philharmonic.

“Sacramento is such a forward thinking city with a deep appreciation for the arts, so it’s the perfect place to showcase living music,” said Executive Director, Alice Sauro. “Our musicians will work directly with Loren in a real-time collaboration. The result will be an authentic expression of her piece that is unique to our audience—our community right here and now. That’s not an opportunity you get with most of the classical canon!”

The culminating program, led by Grammy Award-winning conductor David Alan Miller, celebrates the American tradition with works by Gershwin while also guiding patrons into the future of the art form through the esteemed work by Loiacono, and a Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork by her late teacher, Steven Stucky.

The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera is dedicated to increasing the knowledge of the existence and importance of repertoire, composers, influences, and extensive relevance of Americans’ work in the Classical genre as part of history and the future.

“When we take on new works, our audience is shaping what future generations will know as core repertoire,” said Sauro. “Over two hundred years ago, Beethoven was just one of hundreds of composers. It was through the community discourse of audiences who ultimately demanded to hear his music, that he is a household name today. It’s our duty to move the art form forward for generations to come and to foster these conversations in our community.”

BEETHOVEN FESTIVAL: TWO SOLD OUT WEEKS!

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. January 29, 2019. The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera is pleased to announce the 2019 Beethoven Festival as its most successful concert series yet with back-to-back sold out performances! In addition to record ticket sales, this Beethoven Festival stands out thanks to the involvement of internationally recognized conductor and pianist, and former Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Jeffrey Kahane.

The kick-off weekend featured Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and Fourth Piano Concerto. The festival finale, a week later, included the popular Fifth Symphony, Choral Fantasy, and excerpts from Mass in C.

“Clearly, Sacramento loves classical music and it’s exciting to be able to share this success with the community,” said Executive Director Alice Sauro. “We’re so grateful to our patrons for being on this journey with us and embracing all the new, exciting things brought to the stage and into the community.”

Since their 2015 return as a combined organization, the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera has increased subscription sales by fifty percent, consistently sold out classical concerts, and continued to solidify a place on the Sacramento arts scene.

“Patrons often tell us they enjoy the variety of conductors and guest soloists who are presented in a way they’ve never experienced before,” said Sauro. “As we’ve further embedded ourselves into the community, attracting artists at the caliber of Maestro Kahane has been vital. That, combined with the artistic growth of the orchestra, is a true testament to how far the organization has come—and we have so much more to share with the Sacramento region.”

The highly anticipated 2018-19 season continues with programs highlighting all American composers for the first time, and finishes with a robust semi-staging of the beloved opera, Rigoletto. The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera is also slated to soon announce its 2019-20 season.

Nancy Fisher’s gift sends a clear message and signals a great deal of confidence in us,” said Executive Director, Alice Sauro. “Our path of fiscal responsibility and artistic excellence put us on an upward trajectory and Nancy recognizes that and believes in us. We’re not only thrilled but we couldn’t be more grateful for this kind of support.”

“It’s a game changer,” says Board President, Laurie Nelson. “A sponsorship of this magnitude is absolutely transformative—it helps us get to that next level and lets us continue to bring the joy of classical music to Sacramento’s cultural landscape.”

The upcoming season’s programming will include repertoire by Brahms, Mozart, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Pops concerts showcasing The Music of Prince, ABBA, and favorite hits from Hollywood films. Once again an array of guest conductors and virtuoso soloists will be featured. “It’s support from people like Nancy that make all this possible. Period,” emphasizes Sauro. “To garner so much talent takes more than ticket sales and Nancy understands just how much goes into each and every concert.”

Also new for the 2017-2018 season is the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera’s Wellness Program, which just rolled out with a yearlong series at Sophie’s Place, a pediatric music therapy center at Sutter Children’s Hospital. The program brings in small ensembles, so that pediatric patients get to experience the healing powers of music in a tranquil yet engaging environment.

RALEY FAMILY FOUNDATION INVESTS $300,000 IN
THE SACRAMENTO PHILHARMONIC & OPERA
Nancy McRae Fisher Renews Pops! Season Underwriting

The Thomas P. Raley Foundation has invested $300,000 to support the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera over the next three years. Thomas P. Raley was the founder of Raley’s Supermarkets, which also owns Bel Air Markets and Nob Hill Foods. The Thomas P. Raley Foundation and family have a long history of funding and expanding the arts in the Sacramento region.
“The Thomas P. Raley Foundation is delighted to support the artistic endeavors of the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera,” said Joyce Raley Teel, the daughter of Thomas P. Raley, who serves as the co-chair of the foundation with her husband Jim Teel. “The leadership has shown great fiscal responsibility and artistic programming that is accessible to our community and we have faith in the organization.”
Upon its return to the stage in 2015, the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera set new records for season subscriptions and single ticket sales, all while operating within budget. Audiences and donors are enthusiastically reinvesting to once again make the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera a valued, viable asset and priority for the entire community.
“From our board to the staff and musicians, we are so grateful for the Thomas P. Raley Foundation’s continued support and sincere faith in our efforts. This past year we have demonstrated a path to sustainability and how vital the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera is within the arts community in the Sacramento region. When the arts thrive, the benefits transcend beyond entertainment to education and community outreach initiatives. We’re here to stay, and it is wonderful that the Thomas P. Raley Foundation recognizes our efforts and accomplishments,” said Laurie Nelson, Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera board president.
“We are deeply appreciative to the Thomas P. Raley Foundation for its generous support and sincere faith in our efforts,” said Alice Sauro, Executive Director of the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera. “This major gift is the first step of many in restoring the long-term health of the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera. As such, we have positioned their $100,000 gift as a Challenge Grant, matching dollar-for-dollar all new and increased gifts from other individuals, companies, and foundations through December 31, 2016.” The 2016-17 season will be further supported by the generosity of Nancy McRae Fisher, who will underwrite the Pops! Series for the second year in a row.
“Last year was astonishing. The Pops! Series was not only fun but literally filled the house! They are continually breaking records, bringing in new audiences, and reinvigorating classical music in the region. I am thrilled to be a part of it again for the 2016-17 season,” said Fisher. To make a donation towards the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera and Thomas P. Raley Foundation matching challenge, please call 916-476-5975 or visit www.SacPhilOpera.org.
