Elizabeth Hanje is a Tanzanian-American soprano from Vestavia Hills, Alabama. In the 2025-26 season, Hanje sang the roles of Strawberry Woman in Porgy and Bess, First Alms Sister in Suor Angelica (Il trittico), Madeline Audebert in Kevin Puts’ Silent Night, and Gertrude in Family Day Hansel and Gretel with the Houston Grand Opera. She also joined the Corpus Christi Symphony singing the role of Micaëla in Carmen. Elizabeth was recently named a 2026 Grand Finalist winner of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2026 Eric and Dominique Laffont competition. This summer she will join the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence as a resident of their Académie de Voix. In the summer of 2025, Hanje was an Apprentice Singer for Santa Fe Opera, where she covered the role of Gerhilde and received an Outstanding First Year Apprentice Award at The Santa Fe Opera. In her first year as Butler Studio artist, Elizabeth made her mainstage debut as Ines in Il trovatore. In 2024, Hanje was a Young Artist with the Merola Opera Program where she’s noted for her “subtle mastery and inconspicuous control” as Marguerite in Massenet’s Faust. Elizabeth was an Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera (2023), and she is a 2022 alumna of HGO’s Young Artist Vocal Academy. Hanje was the first-place winner of Houston Grand Opera’s 2024 Eleanor McCollum Competition Concert of Arias.
