Three Decembers

Jake Heggie’s dramedy Three Decembers is an intimate chamber opera that follows Broadway star Madeline Mitchell and her two adult children, Bea and Charlie, across three Decembers: 1986, 1996, and 2006. As the years pass, the family grapples with old secrets, personal loss, and the emotional distance left by Madeline’s fame.

The opera is set against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis in the 1980’s and 90’s, with December 1996 featuring the death of a Charlie’s partner Burt to the disease. The narrative also deals with themes of chosen family and the challenges faced by gay individuals during this period.

With a heartfelt libretto by Gene Scheer, based on a play by Terrence McNally, and a lyrical score by Heggie, Three Decembers is a moving exploration of family, identity, and the ties that endure.

The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera 2025-2026 Season and Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Ari Pelto are generously underwritten by the Nancy and Hank Fisher Family Fund.
