<p><a href="https://www.jakeheggie.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener external" data-wpel-link="external">Jake Heggie</a>’s&nbsp;dramedy&nbsp;<em>Three Decembers&nbsp;</em>is an intimate chamber opera that follows Broadway star Madeline Mitchell and her two adult children, Bea and Charlie, across three Decembers: 1986, 1996, and 2006. As the years pass, the family grapples with old secrets, personal loss, and the emotional distance left by Madeline’s fame.</p>

<p>The opera is set against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis in the 1980's and 90's, with December 1996 featuring the death of a Charlie's partner Burt to the disease. The narrative also deals with themes of chosen family and the challenges faced by gay individuals during this period.</p>

<p>With a heartfelt libretto by Gene Scheer, based on a play by Terrence McNally, and a lyrical score by Heggie, Three Decembers is a moving exploration of family, identity, and the ties that endure.</p>
