Jonathan Smucker


The American tenor, Jonathan Smucker, studied at Northwestern University and Interlochen Arts Academy. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Voice, Master of Music degree in Voice, and Postgraduate Diploma in Voice Performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, receiving special honors for excellence in Operatic and Baroque performance. He received further training at the Aspen Music Festival, and was an apprentice artist for Ash Lawn Opera.

Jonathan Smucker’s repertoire spans more than forty roles, ranging from Baroque to contemporary and encompassing opera, oratorio, operetta, and musical theater. Recent credits include Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore for Music in the Mountains, Evangelist in J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion (BWV 245) with Vallejo Choral Society, Acis in Acis and Galateawith Marin Oratorio, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni for West Bay Opera, Belmonte in The Abduction from the Seraglio for Pocket Opera, Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos for West Edge Opera, and tenor soloist in Dioclesian with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. In demand throughout the Bay Area and USA, he has appeared as soloist with companies including Aspen Opera Theater Center, San Francisco Opera Guild, Festival Opera, West Edge Opera, Ensemble Parallèle, Opera San Luis Obispo, Townsend Opera, Livermore Valley Opera, Ash Lawn Opera Festival, and in preview concerts for Opera Santa Barbara. He has also appeared as a soloist with Lamplighters Music Theatre, and San Francisco Opera’s a la Carte program, among others. He makes his company debut at the Opera San Jose as Bardolfo in Verdi’s Falstaff during the 2013-2014 season.

Jonathan Smucker is a member of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Chorale and the Vinaccesi Ensemble, and is featured on their just-released Centaur Records CD- Benedetto Vinaccesi: The Solo Cantatas.

Jonathan Smucker enjoys teaching in all styles of music and welcomes students from beginner to advanced. Lessons consist of vocal exercises, breath and body work, and musical and dramatic coaching.
