Dimitri Pittas


Dimitri Pittas has appeared on leading opera stages throughout North America and Europe, including the Bavarian State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Canadian Opera Company. He is a graduate of The Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and has been heard on the Met stage as Rodolfo in La bohème, Macduff in Macbeth, Nemorino in L’elisir d’Amore, Cassio in Otello, Alfred in Die Fledermaus and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. His repertoire includes performances as the title role of Don Carlo, Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera, Alfredo in La traviata, Tebaldo in I Capuletti e i Montecchi, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Oronte in Verdi’s rarity, I Lombardi, the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto and Michele in the world premiere of La Ciociara (Two Women) by Marco Tutino with San Francisco Opera, directed by Francesca Zambello. For his debut with The Canadian Opera Company as the Duke, the Toronto Star said, “Dimitri Pittas comes off the best as The Duke of Mantua, with a flexible voice that can express real love and shallow desire with equal conviction.”

Operatic engagements of the current season include Alfredo in La traviata with Houston Opera and Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore with Pittsburgh Opera. In concert he performs Verdi’s Requiem with the Atlanta Symphony and the Portland Symphony. Last season, Mr. Pittas sang Verdi’s Requiem for the BBC Proms with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment led by Marin Alsop, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Oslo Philharmonic, and Rachmaninoff’s The Bells with the Orchestre Metropolitain de Montreal, under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Operatic engagements included Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with Houston Grand Opera, a return to the Bolshoi Opera in the title role of Don Carlo, his role debut as Lt. Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Washington National Opera, and performances of Alfred in Die Fledermaus with Santa Fe Opera.

Other previous engagements include Cassio in a new Opening Night production of Otello at The Metropolitan Opera, directed by Bartlett Sher. He also performed the role of Alfred in Die Fledermaus at the Met conducted by James Levine, and in Japan under the baton of Seiji Ozawa as well as Nemorino in L’elisir d’Amore with Opera Philadelphia. On the concert stage, he sang Verdi’s Requiem with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under Donald Runnicles at the Grand Teton Music Festival. He was also seen as Rodolfo in La bohème with Opera de Paris, Opera National de Bordeaux, Dallas Opera, and Palm Beach Opera, Don Carlo in a new production of the same name for Opera Philadelphia, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with Deutsche Oper Berlin, Verdi’s Requiem with Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the baton of Mariss Jansons and with Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Kansas City Symphony, and Mozart’s Requiem with the Lincoln Center Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra under Louis Langrée.

Additional highlights of recent seasons include Rodolfo in La bohème with Oper Frankfurt, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Oper Leipzig, and Santa Fe Opera; Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with the Bavarian State Opera and Welsh National Opera; Don Carlo at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse; the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto at Opéra National de Bordeaux and Opéra de Lille; and Macduff in Macbeth at the Royal Opera at Covent Garden and the Bavarian State Opera.  Mr. Pittas has performed Tebaldo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Bavarian State Opera, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Houston Grand Opera, and the title role of Faust in Bordeaux. On the Santa Fe stage has performed Achille in Offenbach’s La belle Hélène, and Narraboth in Salome. Concert highlights comprise Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Cincinnati Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra, Verdi’s Requiem with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, as well as at Carnegie Hall at the annual recital of the Marilyn Horne Foundation.
